The PPSII previously featured a discussion on the problems of characterizing countries as either ‘developing’ or ‘developed’ : it masks many marginalized people left behind in so-called developed states. In Canada, there are communities like Attawapiskat where housing and communities are neglected by the government. Attawapiskat declared a ‘state of emergency’ earlier this year, and despite media coverage, the federal government has not taken adequate action. Chief Theresa Spence is therefore on a hunger strike to bring national attention to Attawapiskat’s plight. As a Canadian, I’m embarrassed, and feel my country has no right to categorize itself as ‘developed’ while wholeheartedly neglecting First Nations Communities. #idlenomore.
